AFL urged to provide ‘clarity’ after Rising Star snub

Port Adelaide great Warren Tredrea has called for the AFL to provide clarity over its NAB Rising Star nomination process after Adelaide youngster Lachie Sholl's snub this week.

AFL fans and Sholl's Adelaide teammates were left stunned when Collingwood youngster Isaac Quaynor received this week's Rising Star nomination, despite Sholl having 24 disposals and kicking two goals in Adelaide's win over Carlton.

Tredrea admitted that Quaynor likely got the nod over Sholl due to his body of work across the whole season, but urged the AFL to set the record straight on its selection process.

"Clarity, like anything, always helps in this game and as we know, with the sling tackle (for example), you need clarity and then you can make the judgement on the back of clarity," he told Wide World of Sports' Talk of the Town.

Lachie Sholl

"I think Sholl was deadset stiff because his performance was brilliant, but Quaynor has had a wonderful year.

"The AFL is running out of time, but I would suggest that if Sholl has a pretty good game (in Round 18), I dare say he'll be up in lights for four possessions this week he might get.
"

While admitting that Quaynor has enjoyed a successful season for Collingwood, Tredrea said he was "shocked" when he learned of Sholl's snub.

"I was shocked last night in the newsroom when it came through and he had missed out," he said.

"Quaynor's had an unbelievable season and his work over the entire season would suggest that he's probably in front. From the instance of the game, if it was to come down the single match, then Sholl certainly gets the (selection).

"What you'll find is with Sholl's games played, he'll be eligible for selection next year, Quaynor probably not so because he's probably played more than the threshold."

Isaac Quaynor

Tredrea was also backed up by AFL columnist Sam McClure, who also called for more transparency from the league.

"It's done on a much broader basis than (one round)," he told Talk of the Town.

"They want to see consistency in performance and that's why you see top 10 picks who have good games earlier in the year don't necessarily get the nominations because they know they'll probably play another good game later in the year.

"Isaac Quaynor was probably on some sort of whiteboard and they would have liked to get him a nomination, but you make a rod for your own back as a selector when in the last few weeks a Lachie Sholl pulls out a great performance.

"It would be a really big fillip for them and the fans if they just come out and openly admit that.

"I don't know why they have to hide it, but it causes frustration and good on the Crows players for trying to stir the pot and sticking up for one of their own."

Both Tredrea and McClure's calls for clarity over the selection process come after Sholl's teammates took to social media to plead his case.
