Real Madrid 2021/22 road to the Champions League final

Real Madrid are aiming to make history on Saturday evening when they go head-to-head with Liverpool in the 2021/22 Champions League final.

Madrid are the undisputed kings of Europe, winning a staggering 13 European Cups/Champions Leagues throughout their storied history.

Said total, which could become 14 this weekend, is nowhere close to being matched by any other side. AC Milan have seven Champions Leagues with Liverpool in 3rd spot with six.

Now, ahead of what could be Real’s 14th Champions League victory, 101 will take you through Los Blancos’ route to the final.

Group D upset

Real Madrid were drawn in Group D of the 2021/22 Champions League group stage along with Inter Milan, Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Sheriff.

Real were expected to dominate said group and, for the most part, they did just that.

Los Blancos won five of their six group games to secure top spot, but they did suffer one major setback along the way as they lost to Moldovan side Sheriff by two goals to one in their second group game, which was one of the biggest upsets in Champions League history.

Comeback kings

Real Madrid were then handed by far and away the toughest path to the final. Carlo Ancelotti’s side had to see off PSG, Chelsea and Real Madrid in the knockout rounds to make it to Paris.

And though Madrid should be praised for beating those three European giants, they did not exactly make it easy on themselves.

First up, Madrid lost their first Round of 16 meeting with PSG 1-0 before then going 1-0 down after 39 minutes of the return leg. This meant Real had to score three goals in the second half to progress.

And, thanks to some Karim Benzema magic, they did just that, with the Frenchman netting a 17-minute hat-trick to win his team the game.

The Spanish powerhouse then took on current Champions League holders Chelsea in the quarter-finals, beating Thomas Tuchel’s side 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in the first leg.

Said win did appear to all but confirm Madrid’s spot in the semis. However, Thomas Tuchel and co., in what looked set to be one of the greatest ever Champions League comebacks, found themselves 3-0 up at the Bernabeu with just 10 minutes of normal time to play.

However, Rodrygo then scored an 80th-minute goal to take the match to extra time before Benzema netted the winner after 96 minutes.

Madrid’s third and final comeback this year came in the semi-final vs Manchester City.

The Sky Blues beat Madrid 4-3 in the first leg but, in truth, should have put the tie to bed in that match.

Pep Guardiola’s side then took a 1-0 lead in the second leg after 73 minutes, meaning Madrid had just 17 minutes to score twice and take the game to extra time.

And, though they left it very, very late, Real did just that, with Rodrygo coming off the bench to score in the 90th and 91st minute. This was, of course, followed by Karim Benzema scoring the winning goal five minutes into extra time, booking Real Madrid a spot in the 2021/22 final.
